Recently John Slattery of Mad Men said that what viewers want is to see Roger Sterling end up with Joan. What an idiotic idea! Why would any fan of this show want someone as nice as Joan to end up with an alcoholic, divorced, philandering loser like Roger? In fact, why would they want any kind of conclusion from a show that has been going downhill for the past two seasons? Don Draper has become a drunken bore. His ex-wife Betty a dull suburban housewife. The plots are full of sturm and drang but very little substance. This past week's episode in which Roger visits his daughter's hippie commune was a cliche-ridden absurdity. Peggy has gone from enigmatic to downright unlikeable and her staff of art directors and writers are all vulgar boors. Most of the viewers I know keep watching as one stares at a car wreck. Too bad, it was once a terrific show.
