Coke Is Going To Try And Sell You Milk
The headline above is a good example of English usage that has always bugged me. I have never understood why people say "and" instead of "to" in situations like this. It seems to me that the headline should be, "Coke is going to try to sell you milk". But people say things like, "We're going to try and go to Disneyland." Again, why not "to" since you're not sure you're going anymore than Coke is sure they're going to sell you milk. I appreciate that this "and" is accepted English usage. I find it annoying. But it's only been bugging me since 1950 when one of my favorite movies had it as a title.
