Two really horrible movies.
One of the most interesting thing about movies is that there is one they make over and over again, each time giving it a different title and a slightly different plot, yet it's the same movie. This year they called one version The Conjuring and another Sinister. The basic plot is that a family usually a father, mother and two kids move into a remote house. Everything is fine at first, then things begin to happen. Usually they are the kind of creepy things that would send normal people packing, but not in these movies. More often than not there's a little dead girl running around who not everybody can see. While the family is plagued by some pissed-off ghost, there is usually a local policeman or sheriff paying regular visits, and often there is a nearby professor of the occult whose sage advice always goes ignored. I am ashamed to admit that though I caught on to this formula years ago, I still fell for this year's versions of the same old story. And both were lousy, surprising no one. Sinister was probably the worse since it went in for the Stephen King-type ending, which is to say that everybody dies. I hate films where everybody dies. By the way, that's not a spoiler. You couldn't spoil this film any more than it is.
