It wasn't always easy to find out if someone was stupid. You had to engage in conversations. You had to listen to their opinions on art, literature, politics. You couldn't make snap judgements until you had thoroughly investigated their thought processes. Fortunately all that has changed, saving us a great deal of time. Now if someone says they watch Fox News, you know they're an idiot.
