RUN THAT BY ME AGAIN.

"Quitting is hard. Like quitting every Monday hard." What the hell does that mean? That''s a line in a Nicorette commercial that means something only to the writer. I think too many copywriters today write lines that only they understand and the clients are too dense to question them, When I was a copywriter for 40 years my rule was, "first make it clear, then make it clever." There are so many commercials today that lack logic. And how's this for a completely unconnected line. Surprisingly it's on many vacant store windows in Coral Gables, Florida."Inside, wonderful things are happening. Come back soon to find out." Duh.

  1. As surprised as I am to find this thread, I'll add "pleasantly" in front, bc, hey, I did Google it.
Great. I don't feel silly for just not getting the "quit like Monday" err, uh, slogan? At this point-Who cares? Not me. Thanks to this article. Appreciate cha! πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎπŸ˜

  2. I couldn't figure this one our either, and it drove me nuts!! I "accidentally" asked my husband TWICE what is was supposed to mean and he liked to blow a gasket because I asked him more than once!! Anyway, I;m glad I'm not the only one that doesn't get it!! Glad I googled it and found your response! Thanks Cranky Copywriter!!

  3. So this still doesn't answer the question, "What the hell does that mean?" But ... best I can tell from my google search quitting every Monday is some kind of technique for quitting smoking.

  5. That line likewise infuriates me (and that offending commercial is in heavy rotation) and I wholeheartedly concur that it is something that has significance only to this particularly flawed copywriter

  6. I, too landed here because this line in the commercial made no sense to me. However, consider this: Maybe it meant nothing to the copywriter either! But by putting in the phrase, they can get a feel from the consternation we have. Just look at all of the internet traffic this has generated. If I wrote it, I'd be doing my happy dance, because my commercial is attracting attention.

  8. Put me down as another that found this thread after hearing that commercial for the umpteenth time and finally googling to see if it annoyed others.

  9. It does such a great job of causing people to react. “What the hell does that mean?!!” As an attention grabber it’s doing a better job than it would if it actually made sense! From an advertising point of view: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

  10. That, "Like quitting every Monday hard," line pisses me off every time I hear it! The very first time I heard it I immediately knew it meant nothing -- at least not to me or anyone with half a brain. But, just hearing such nonsense pisses me off. Why, you might ask? Because it's indicative of how far down we have slid as a civilized society. We have dumbed ourselves down to such a degree that a language soup, such as this, can pass for intellectual content. That's why! It's pure nonsense being passed off as having some deep profound meaning. It just makes stoopid[sic] people even stoopider![sic]
