DOWNTON DOWNER
While Series 6 of Downton Abbey was very good last night it had a really unpleasant beginning, at least for me. While I've come to like the characters on the series, I detest fox hunting and to see two of the leading characters, Lady Mary and Lord Grantham, engaged in this blood sport was disturbing. There's no question, of course, that the aristocrats hunted foxes until their dogs captured the defenseless animal and ripped it to pieces. Stlll it's disgusting, sadistic, and not something kind people do.

Thankfully, like this wretched series soon will be, fox hunting is a thing of the past. We are constantly amazed that from The New York Times on down, this show receives positive reviews that never even mention what a ripoff it is. They even refer to Downton's "upstairs downstairs" world without even a reference to the brilliant Jean Smart series. Julian Fellowes gets away with plagiarism again and again. Not to mention unlikely and embarrassing plot lines. (Mrs. Patmore talking to Mr. Carson about his sex life? The silly Bates-and-Anna saga? Please!) We hatewatch it so that we can credibly criticize its absurdity.
ReplyDeleteSilly us. We of course meant Jean Marsh.
