THE TIMES THEY AREN'T A-CHANGING

Th great American opera Porgy and Bess debuted in 1935. Despite being 85 years old, it still has current themes. In an early scene two white cops enter the all-black ghetto of Catfish Row where a tenant has recently been murdered. They immediately accuse an innocent man of the crime, beat him with a nightstick and haul him off to jail. They plan to keep him illegally imprisoned until they catch the real murderer. There was constant police brutality then, and it hasn't changed much. Let us hope come November our bigoted heartless president is out of office and replaced by a man with a kind heart and lifelong belief that Black Lives Matter.
