In an age of wild theories, conspiracies and otherwise, here's mine. While many of the insurrectionists that invaded the Capitol were thugs, cultists, and idiots clinging to one political sector or another, I think most of them are just game-starved sports fans. Where else do you see hyped up, face-painting, screaming, often-destructive, mostly male mobs? At sports stadiums. But for months those venues have been unavailable as places to relieve all those uncontrollable hormones. No bloody fights in the hockey rink. No bone-crushing tackles on the football field. No fury when your team loses. No exaltation when your team wins. No chance to root or share your unbridled passion with like-minded, often angry, people. So, hopefully when Covid-19 is over, we'll see a lot fewer vicious, violent vandals.
