Last night Billl Maher attacked the cruise industry in the most nasty and unfair possible way. He suggested that every cruise ship is a floating Petri dish, and cited the recent two (count 'em two) cruise ships on which there were passengers with coronavirus. He also mentioned the several past incidents of cruises that were infected with norovirus and minor scrapes with other ships. These rare incidents in a industry with many thousands of cruises every year are hardly the standard, despite his vitriolic attack and advice to never take a cruise. I personally have taken six Atlantic crossings, two Miami to L.A. cruises, and at least a dozen other Caribbean and Canadian cruises. Every one was delightful and problem free. I love cruising. It let's you visit exciting places, unpack only once, dine on excellent meals, see lavish live musical productions, attend lectures, gamble if your like, work out on first-class equipment and spa services, meet a variety of new people, and enjoy the fresh air and sense of freedom that only the sea can provide. And your choices are extensive, from economy long-weekend getaways, to week-long adventures, to extended around-the-world odysseys. I realize there are many people who dislike and fear ships with the same same passion I hate flying. I'm guessing Bill is one of them. Great. They should avoid ships. But millions of other travelers love ships. I am one of them. I personally would love to take one of the American or European riverboat cruises, but they are very, very expensive. So, Bill.I think your assault on the cruise industry was petty, unfair, slanted, inaccurate and frankly mean-spirited.
